How to Install Stair Treads Over Existing Stairs

Introduction to Adjustable Balusters
Open Sided Stair Remodel With Adjustable Iron Balusters
Step-by-step: How to refinished an open sided staircase using NuStair prefinished stair treads and our adjustable iron balusters. Perfect for DIYers or contractors.
- Remove carpet from stairs (if installed)
- Cut tread ends flush to outside wall
- Remove existing newel post
- Apply shims and first riser. Riser should be flush with existing tread nosing.
- Nail along top of riser where next tread will cover. Apply minimal nails along bottom.
- Apply NON water based adhesive to existing tread and install first NuStair tread.
- Nail along back edge so that next riser covers nail holes.
- Install new newel post and attach to handrail.
- You can now remove current balusters.
- Install second riser and Nustair tread.
- Continue until all treads are installed.
- Install stair brackets to cover gaps between new and old risers.
- Install top adjustable shoes. These should cover any existing holes.
- Cut and install balusters with bottom shoes.
- Install Remaining balusters until complete.
Open Sided Stair Remodel With Adjustable Wooden Balusters
Step-by-step: How to refinished an open sided staircase using NuStair prefinished stair treads and our adjustable wooden balusters. Perfect for DIYers or contractors.
- Remove carpet from stairs (if installed)
- Cut tread ends flush to outside wall
- Remove existing newel post
- Apply shims and first riser. Riser should be flush with existing tread nosing.
- Nail along top of riser where next tread will cover. Apply minimal nails along bottom.
- Apply NON water based adhesive to existing tread and install first NuStair tread.
- Nail along back edge so that next riser covers nail holes.
- Install new newel post and attach to handrail.
- You can now remove current balusters.
- Install second riser and Nustair tread.
- Continue until all treads are installed.
- Install stair brackets to cover gaps between new and old risers.
- Mark and drill bottom holes for new adjustable balusters.
- Measure and mark top of adjustable balusters for cutting.
- Slide adjustable sleeve up to bottom of handrail and nail into place.
- Install remaining balusters until complete.
How To Install Adjustable Balusters

Baluster Installation Instructions:
Tools Needed: Pencil, tape measure, hack saw, power drill, allen wrench
- Begin by removing your old balusters.
- Carefully remove any nails or debris.
- Position baluster and mark the top and bottom.
- Measure .5″ below top mark for cut line.
- Measure 1.5″ above bottom mark for cut line.
- Secure and cut baluster with hack saw.
- Position top hardware and install with screws.
- Attach bottom and insert into top hardware.
- Position bottom hardware and install with screws.
- Tighten set screw with allen wrench.
- Tighten top set screw with allen wrench.
- Continue installation repeating the same steps.
Additional Baluster Installation Information:
- Pre-drilling of hand rail and stairs may be necessary.
- For stairs with angled base, use 2 adjustable pieces of hardware.
